- Nature of the Service
Through the GCG Website, we aim to provide academia, businesses, and governments with an online research platform to advance the competitiveness and governability of Ibero-American countries in a globalized world. Since its launch in 2007, the GCG Journal has brought together the region's academic and scientific communities to showcase the latest research on the topics of Globalization, Competitiveness, and Governability across the region. The GCG Journal publishes articles, information, images, materials and other content submitted to the GCG Website by scholarly authors in 3 areas: 1) theoretical frameworks, 2) applied theory, and 3) case studies (collectively, the “Content”).
Access to the GCG Website is voluntary and free of charge for you. Users of the GCG Website may include GCG Website administrators, journal managers, authors, editors, reviewers, layout editors, proofreaders, and readers.
We are committed to respecting your privacy. This Agreement discloses the information gathering and dissemination practices for the GCG Website. By using the GCG Website, you are consenting to our collection and use of your personal and other information in the manner described in this Agreement. The GCG Website is provided as an information service only and does not constitute political, legal, accounting, educational, career, or professional advice on any subject matter.
- Administration and Appropriate Use of the GCG Website
You agree to use the GCG Website in good faith, for generally accepted uses, and in strictly accordance with this Agreement.
You may not use the GCG Website for any illegal purpose or in any manner that could damage, disable, overburden, or impair, in any way, its normal use or operation. You may not use the GCG Website for any purpose except those expressly permitted in this Agreement. If you attempt to 'hack' or otherwise gain unauthorized access to or compromise the GCG Website, we may terminate your account and report your activities to appropriate law enforcement officials. You may not use the GCG Website for commercial or profit-making purposes. This means that you may not upload, post, transmit, share, or otherwise make available any unsolicited or unauthorized advertising, solicitations, or promotional materials (including "spam," "junk mail," "chain letters," and "pyramid schemes"). You may not display advertisements or place commercial Content in your account. You also may not use the GCG Website in connection with any partisan political activities, including supporting individual candidates for office.
You confirm that the information you provided when submitting your registration is true and accurate. You are prohibited from failing to identify yourself or impersonating other users or individuals. Anonymous access to the GCG Website or posting of Content on the GCG Website is strictly forbidden. You may not share your account with any other person.
Professional and appropriate etiquette is expected and required at all times on the GCG Website. You are encouraged to report promptly to us any violations of this Agreement or other inappropriate or offensive conduct on the GCG Website.
You are solely responsible for the Content that you upload, publish, display, transmit, or share (collectively, “Upload”) to or on the GCG Website. You may not Upload any Content that you did not author or create unless you have the permission of the author, creator or other rightsholder. Uploading materials protected by copyright, trademark, or other legal or proprietary rights, such as music, video, software, and logos, is prohibited unless you own, or have the permission of the owner, of such materials.
We reserve the right to remove Content that, in our sole judgment, violates this Agreement; is inconsistent with our mission or values; is illegal, offensive, defamatory, obscene, unprofessional, or off-topic; violates the rights (including privacy, publicity and intellectual property rights) or threatens the safety of any third party; or violates standards of common courtesy and etiquette. In our sole discretion, we may terminate the accounts of users who repeatedly violate these principles.
- Agreement to Licensing and Publication of Content
By submitting Content to the GCG Website for review and publication, you expressly and voluntarily grant us a non-exclusive right and license (including the right to sublicense) to publicly display, communicate, reproduce, translate, distribute, and take other necessary and appropriate actions to disseminate the Content in all forms of media whether now known or hereafter developed. Among other things, we may extract figures, tables, images, and other graphic elements, capture subtitles and metadata related to the article in order to search, display, or print the Content; authorize agents or distributors to transmit, distribute, or reproduce the Content; prepare bibliographic citations, abstracts, and indices, and capture references related to all or certain parts of the Content; scan and/or save the images and text contained in the Content; and include your Content in scientific information databases and systems (including, but not limited to, the REDALYC -Red de Revistas Científicas de América Latina y el Caribe, Spain and Portugal-, SCIELO, ABI / INFORM of Proquest LLC, etc.).
You also represent and warrant that the Content is your original work of authorship; that you own copyright or otherwise possess rights in the Content necessary to grant us the non-exclusive right and license to use the Content as provided herein; that the copyright in or other exclusive right to use the Content has not previously been transferred or assigned to any third party; that the Content has not been published elsewhere in whole or in part, and that no agreement with any third party to publish the Content has been made; that you have obtained, at your expense, any third-party consents or permissions necessary for us to use the Content by us in the manner provided herein; and that the Content contains no matter which is libelous, invades the privacy rights of any individual, or infringes the intellectual property or proprietary rights of any third party.
- Ownership and Permitted Uses of Content and other Materials Made Available on the GCG Website
The Content made available to you through the GCG Website is intended to educate and inform you about the latest research on the topics of Globalization, Competitiveness, and Governability across Ibero-America, and about LALP and the services and resources it provides. To that end, you are hereby granted a non-exclusive, limited, personal, revocable, non-transferable and non-sublicensable license (a) to access the GCG Website solely for purposes of viewing and using the Content for your personal, non-commercial use and (b) to print out pages from the GCG Website for your personal, non-commercial use. In so doing, you may not alter or remove any copyright symbol or other identification concerning ownership or authorship of any of the Content. You agree that, except as expressly authorized in this Paragraph 5, you may not copy, distribute, transmit, display, perform, or create derivative works of such Content.
In additon, you acknowledge and agree that the GCG Website (including its database structure and coding) is and shall remain solely our property, and that it is protected by copyright, trademark, and/or other proprietary rights and laws. The trademarks, logos, and service marks displayed on the GCG Website are our valuable registered and unregistered trademarks and may not be used by you in any manner except as permitted in this Paragraph 5. Nothing contained on the GCG Website should be construed as granting, by implication, estoppel or otherwise, any license or right to use any such trademarks without our express written permission.
- No Endorsement
The Content and other ideas and issues presented on the GCG Website do not constitute, and should not be construed to imply, the making of any statement or the expression of any opinion on the part of Georgetown University or LALP. We neither approve nor endorse the Content or other ideas or issues presented on the GCG Website, and it does not represent the official views or positions of Georgetown University or LALP.
- Limitation of Liability
IN NO EVENT SHALL WE BE LIABLE TO YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON FOR ANY LOSS OF BUSINESS OR PROFITS, OR FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF ANY USE OF, OR INABILITY TO USE, THE GCG WEBSITE, EVEN IF WE PREVIOUSLY HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY OTHER CLAIM BY YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON.
- Disclaimer of Warranty
We will not be liable to you or any third party for any scheduled or unscheduled maintenance of the GCG Website that may result in accessibility, accuracy, completeness, relevance, timeliness, and reliability issues; any Internet or program viruses, or any other external programs, that may affect your computers, systems, or files after accessing the GCG Website; any illegal, negligent, or fraudulent use of the GCG Website by any third party any errors or modifications made to the Content as a result of the reception, storage, and transmission of data; any unauthorized third party’s use of the Content or the GCG Website; or any breach by any third party of any of its obligations relating to the services provided to users of the GCG Website; or any lack of quality, reliability or adequacy of the Content or third-party services made available to users on the GCG Website.
IN ANY CASE, WE (INCLUDING OUR EMPLOYEES, AGENTS, THIRD-PARTY CONTENT PROVIDERS AND LICENSORS) DO NOT WARRANT THAT ACCESS TO AND USE OF THE GCG WEBSITE WILL BE FREE FROM INTERRUPTIONS OR FREE FROM ERRORS, OR THAT ANY CONTENT, MATERIAL OR OTHER INFORMATION ACCESSIBLE FROM OR RELATED TO THE GCG WEBSITE IS FREE OF VIRUSES, WORMS, OR OTHER HARMFUL COMPONENTS. THE GCG WEBSITE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT ANY WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF TITLE OR IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. NO WARRANTY IS MADE AS TO THE RESULTS THAT MAY BE OBTAINED FROM USE OF THE GCG WEBSITE, OR AS TO THE ACCURACY, RELIABILITY OR CONTENT OF ANY CONTENT, MATERIAL, INFORMATION, OR SERVICE PROVIDED. YOUR SOLE REMEDY FOR DISSATISFACTION WITH THE GCG WEBSITE OR THE CONTENT IS TO STOP USING THE GCG WEBSITE OR THE CONTENT.
You agree to defend, indemnify and hold us harmless (including our employees, agents, third-party Content providers and licensors, and each of their respective partners, employees, representatives and agents) from and against all claims, losses, costs, damages, liabilities, and expenses (including but not limited to attorney’s fees) arising out of: (a) your activities in connection with the GCG Website; (b) any violation of this Agreement by you; (c) any improper or unauthorized use of the Content by you; or (d) any allegation that anything you transmit through or in connection with the GCG Website infringes or otherwise violates the copyright, trademark, trade secret, privacy, or other rights of any third party.
- Arbitration and Governing Law
Any claims against us (including our employees, agents, third-party Content providers and licensors, and each of their respective partners, employees, representatives and agents) that arise from or relate to use of the GCG Website shall be governed by the laws of the District of Columbia. Any controversy or claim arising out of or relating to this Agreement, or any breach thereof, shall be settled by arbitration in accordance with the Commercial Arbitration Rules of the American Arbitration Association in Washington, DC, and judgment upon the award rendered by the arbitrator(s) may be entered in any court having jurisdiction thereof.
- Special Provisions Applicable to Users Outside the United States
By using the GCG Website, you consent to having your personal data transferred to and processed in the United States.
- Termination and Survival
We may terminate this Agreement and delete your account in its sole discretion at any time and with or without notice to you. You may terminate this Agreement and request that we delete your account at any time by contacting us.
This Agreement, together with any other Georgetown University policies referred to herein, is the entire Agreement between you and us relating to your use of the GCG Website, and supersedes any and all prior or contemporaneous written or oral agreements between you and us regarding the same subject matter. The provisions of this Agreement shall inure to our benefit. If any provision of this Agreement is found for any reason to be unlawful, void, or unenforceable, then that provision will be deemed severable from this Agreement and will not affect the validity and enforceability of any remaining provision. Any heading, caption, or section title contained herein is inserted only as a matter of convenience, and in no way defines or explains any section or provision hereof. This Agreement is not assignable, transferable, or sublicensable by you to any third party.

The Information We Collect and How We Use It
We collect two types of information about users of the GCG Website:
(1) Personally identifiable information: Certain services, such as the Request Information Form, to which you may gain access through the GCG Website, may require you to provide personally identifiable information. We use such personally identifiable information to respond to your inquiries and to send you information about the GCG Journal or our programs. If you decide at any time that you no longer wish to receive emails from us, please refer to the paragraph below headed “Changing or Deleting Personal Information.”
If you contact us by email through the GCG Website or submit any information, such as a phone number, through the GCG Website, we will collect any personally identifiable information that you transmit to us and we may keep a record of your contact information and correspondence, and we reserve the right to use your email address and phone number, and any information that you provide to us in your message, to communicate with you. In addition, we may send by email important administrative information regarding the GCG Website or services to users who have provided us with their email addresses. Such information may be important to your use of the GCG Website and is regarding our ongoing relationship with you.
- to learn more about the way you interact with the GCG Website;
- to help us improve your experience when visiting the GCG Website;
- to remember your preferences;
- to identify errors and resolve them; and
- to analyze how well the GCG Website is performing.
The key reason for using cookies is to make visits to the GCG Website more convenient, more efficient and user-friendly for you. The privacy settings in your browser will enable you to customize your cookie settings, including deletion and disabling them. Typically, you will find the controls under the browser's ‘Options' or ‘Preferences' menu. The exact level of customization will depend on your browser. Changing your cookie settings, including deletion and disabling them, may mean that the functionality of the GCG Website and your ability to use some of its features is affected. You will still be able visit our Website but you may not be able to access all of the Content and some of the functions may not operate correctly.
In addition to the uses identified above, we may use the information collected for one or more of the following purposes:
- Tailoring the GCG Website to user needs and improving our service;
- Generating data and reports about usage of the GCG Website;
- Supporting the functioning and security of the GCG Website and our network systems, including protecting our rights and property, protecting the safety of others; and conducting internal research; and
- Providing customer service and application assistance to users.
How We Disclose the Information We Gather
We reserve the right to provide the information we collect to our employees, contractors, agents, and designees to the extent necessary to enable them to perform certain services (e.g., web hosting and maintenance services, improving the GCG Website and features, and customer service) on our behalf. We also reserve the right to disclose such information to any third party if we believe that we are required to do so for any or all of the following reasons: (i) by law; (ii) to comply with legal processes or governmental requests; (iii) to prevent, investigate, and detect compromises of or attacks on the technical integrity of the GCG Website or our network; and (iv) to protect the rights, property, or safety of us and our affiliates, our partners and employees, users of the GCG Website, and the public.
Changing or Deleting Personal Information
If you would like to change your personal information or if you no longer wish to receive materials from us or want your personal information removed from the GCG Website, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Alternatively, when you receive materials from us by email or other communications you can make use of the “opt-out” provision in such communications so that we know that you no longer wish to receive such materials from us.
You should not share your personal account or password information with anyone else. You should notify us immediately if you suspect any unauthorized use of your account or knowledge of your user ID or password.
We will use reasonable security measures to assist in protecting against the loss, misuse, and alteration of personally identifiable information that is under our control. Unfortunately, no security system, or system of transmitting data over the Internet, can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. As a result, while we undertake commercially reasonable efforts to protect your personally identifiable information, we cannot guarantee the security of our servers, the means by which such information is transmitted between your computer and our servers, or any information provided to us or to any third party through or in connection with the GCG Website. You provide all such information to the GCG Website entirely at your own risk.
