THE INFLUENCE OF CULTURAL DIMENSIONS ON COUNTRIES' BANKING CONCENTRATION

Abstract

The objective of the study is to analyze the relationship between cultural dimensions and banking concentration, considering that culture, as a collective programming of a society, has the power to influence decision-making. To carry out this work, Hofstede's cultural dimensions - power distancing, uncertainty avoidance, individualism versus collectivism, masculinity versus femininity, long-term orientation versus short-term orientation and indulgence versus restriction – were used as culture variable and the participation percentage of the three largest banks of the countries were used as banking concentration variable. The results showed that countries that tend to be more power-distanced and restrictive have less banking concentration. The other cultural and control variables analyzed did not present a significant statistically relationship, which may indicate that the large banks have an extremely strong corporate culture, overlapping the influence of the local culture.
